Impact and Aftermath
What were the consequences for companies, individuals, or society?
The consequences of this hack were that over 250,000 organizations worldwide were affected, including government agencies, businesses, and schools. The attackers installed web shells, giving them access to compromised systems, and this led to widespread data theft, corporate espionage, and potential ransomware attacks.
How did the affected company/government respond?
Microsoft, and many other companies/agencies that were attacked responded to this with emergency patches, but many organizations were too slow to update, leaving their systems vulnerable for weeks.
What security measures were implemented afterward?
Afterwards, Microsoft added many security fixes and updates. Updating out-of-band security patches for each exchange server, adding automatic detection and removal tools, and adding new AI-powered threat monitoring.
Did the hack lead to new laws, policies, or security changes?
Since our government was involved, the FBI was included in this. The FBI had then removed web shells, and President Biden (this was in 2021) added an executive order that required all federal agencies to strengthen security measures.
