Dexter cows might look like regular cows to most people, but they’re actually pretty interesting once you get to know them! These cows come in 3 colors: black, red, and dun. You’ll even spot a little white on their udders and cute white horns with black tips. They might look small and sweet, but don’t be fooled, as these chunky cows stand 34 to 46 inches tall with 36 to 42 inches at hip, and their bigger cousins, the Dexter bulls, can grow even bigger! The best part? They’re super gentle and kind, which makes them perfect for family farms and great friends for kids to be around.
Dexter cows live in the open, hilly parts of Ireland, especially in a place called Kerry in the southwest. Even though there isn’t a lot of shelter there, it’s a great spot for big groups of cows to roam. These hardy little cows don’t mind the wind and rain, so farmers like raising them because they don’t need a lot of extra care when the weather gets rough.
Luckily, Dexter cows aren’t in much danger today, but back in the 1970s, they were almost gone! They were put on the endangered list because farmers started using bigger, faster-growing cows that produced more milk and meat. The Dexters were left behind just because they weren’t as “super-sized.” But they made a comeback, and now they’re just fine.
The reason why I picked the Dexter Cow's were because I simply liked them. They were chill, collective, and kind, and they were open to human touch, as one of them attempted to get closer to a group that was watching them. It was cute to see how warm and gentle they were with their own, and with humans.
