The History of Halloween

Jack-o-lantern

Halloween has a rich history that dates back over 2,000 years. It originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on October 31st. The Celts believed that on this day, the boundary between the living and the dead became blurred, and spirits could roam the earth.

During Samhain, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming spirits. When Christianity spread through Celtic lands, the holiday gradually blended with All Saints’ Day on November 1st, and the evening before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which later shortened to Halloween.

Over time, Halloween evolved into a more community-centered holiday, with traditions like trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, and wearing costumes. Today, Halloween is celebrated in many countries with a mix of spooky and fun activities for all ages.
